River Deep, Wedding High

Do you remember the Tina Turner song:

“Do I love you, my oh my

River Deep, Mountain High?”

Perhaps that’s what Roca was humming to himself when he planned his wedding.

Jeroen and Sandra Kippers of Brussels, bungee jumped 160 feet in the air for their wedding ceremony, along with 20 guests.

April Pignataro and Michael Curry of New York City got married in June 2010 inside a shark tank at Atlantis Marine World in Riverhead, N.Y, pronouncing their vows over a radio transmitter.

Roca was not willing to settle for a low altitude wedding in a church or registry office, Roca, like that other famous song, wanted to be “sitting on top of the world”, not standing in the aisle, although the only aisle on top of the Benicadell mountain in the Vall de Albaida was the one formed by the wedding guests, among them the members of Roca’s climbing club Carroza’s Climbing.

At 7 o’clock on the morning of September 14th, 2013, Ramón and his climbing club ascended the mountain, while at 8.30 the bride, Gussi, and guests walked up on the opposite side at a more leisurely pace.

At 11, the Justice of the Peace from Gaianes, Marcos Torregrosa, pronounced the magic words…”I now pronounce you man and wife” and the congregation, 86 brave souls in all, descended the mountain for something to eat at les Planisses, a public leisure area in the forest.

In fact the reception was quite austere, in line with the mountain climbing ambience; all the participants were invited to pasta and chocolate ensaimada.

They say that the path of true love is never an easy one, but with a hard start like this one, the rest of the marriage should be a piece of (wedding) cake.

The night before the wedding was spent at the rural guesthouse ‘Terra Blanca de Benicadell.’
